DanceWorks Helsinki is launching its activity with an exciting repertoire for its spring 2025 season. The season presents two never before seen works by renowned choreographers who push the boundaries of ballet. We are starting the year with a world premiere of If Shadows, choreographed by Minna Tervamäki, starring Hamburg Ballet and Finnish National Ballet soloist Atte Kilpinen as well as Finnish jazz legend Iiro Rantala. Later in the spring, we will be presenting an adapted reprise of Narcisa by Colombian choreographer Gio Ravelo.
Minna Tervamäki and Shadows
Minna Tervamäki is a legendary figure in Finnish dance. With a background in classical ballet and decades of experience as a principal dancer with the Finnish National Ballet, Tervamäki has a distinctive style that blends classical techniques with contemporary themes and movements. Her new work If shadows delves into introspective themes, exploring the idea of shadows—both literal and metaphorical—as they relate to our inner lives and identities.
Gio Ravelo and Narcisa
Gio Ravelo Ravelo is known for his experimental style and nuanced storytelling, and he draws from his personal experience to explore themes of identity and self-reflection. His choreography combines fluid, contemporary movement with structured, almost architectural formations, creating a visual and emotional dialogue. Narcisa is a ballet which brings to life the complexity of self-perception, touching on themes of vanity, vulnerability, and self-discovery.
Both Shadows and Narcisa will be staged in the heart of Helsinki at the Alexander Theater, one of Helsinki’s oldest performance venues. This season promises to be an unforgettable journey through shadow and light, introspection and revelation—one that dance lovers won’t want to miss.
